Mackie McCann, Jr. Obituary

Mackie Lee McCann, Jr., loving known as Joe/Mack, was born on July 20, 1946 to Mackie Lee McCann Sr. and Ora Etta McCann (both preceded him in death).  He grew up in Wiggins, MS where he attended and graduated from Locker High School in 1965 and was a star football player for the Locker High Tigers.  As a young man, Mackie worked with his father and brothers cutting and hauling “Pulp Wood.”  Upon graduation, he had the opportunity to attend Jackson State University on a full athletic scholarship but elected to move to Cleveland, Ohio.

Some of the organizations that Mackie worked for in Cleveland, Ohio included Babcock & Wilcox (Bailey Meter Co.), Riser Foods (Fisher Foods), and Cleveland Cold Storage.  Shortly after his arrival in Ohio, he purchased a brand new 1968 Pontiac Firebird which he still owns.

In 1967, Mackie married Erma J. Fairley and to this union two children were born.  He also joined and was baptized at Bright Star Missionary Baptist Church (Dr. David Hunter, Pastor) in 1971 where he served as a Trustee of the church.

In 1983, Mackie married Kelly D. Jackson and to this union two children were born.  They joined Central Bible Baptist Church (Rev. Harry Cain, Pastor) in 1998, where he was a member of the male chorus, volunteered in many capacities/events and was willing to help anyone that needed assistance.

Ultimately, Mackie retired from the Cleveland Municipal School District in 2010.  His favorite hobby was working on his Firebird which he called “The Green Machine,” and spending time with his family and friends.

Mackie’s kind heart, funny jokes and warm smile will be missed by all of those he knew and loved.  We shall all find comfort in knowing that he has received his crown and peacefully resting with the Lord.  In his sudden passing, he leaves to mourn Kelly, his loving wife of 37 years; his children Meashell McCann, of Cleveland, OH; Deanna McCann, of Cleveland, OH; Janell Johnson (Shirelle), of Bedford, OH; Justin McCann (Nichelle), of Bennettsville, SC; his brothers Johnny McCann (Edna), of Wiggins, MS, Reginald McCann (Miriam), of Wiggins, MS; his sisters Mamie Henry of Sacramento, CA, Frances Scott (preceded in death) (Wilbert), of Pittsburg, CA, Iola McCann, of Wiggins, MS, Marie Smith of Maple Heights, OH, and Judy Williams (Clifton), of Shreveport, LA.; two grandchildren Stacie Evans and Skylar Johnson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends.
