Life and Legacy of…
Lorene Walton Robinson Sims
A Time to Be Born
On May 30, 1938, a beautiful baby girl was born by the name of Lorene Walton to the late Julius Walton and Martha Wooten Walton of Selma, Alabama. She was the 15th of 15 children.
A Time to Live
Lorene attended high school in Selma, Alabama, and later earned her GED at Laney College in Oakland, California. She was a wonderful homemaker and seamstress who took great care of her family. While they were off to school or at work, she spent her time laboring in love - cooking, sewing, and reading while listening to gospel, classical, and rhythm and blues (R&B) music. Lorene made beautiful dresses for her daughter and shorts and pants for her sons. She also created beautiful quilts as gifts for her family. Lorene made full-course breakfasts and dinners almost every day. Love was an action verb for her.
Her smile, laughter, and wit were always present. She readily gave words of encouragement – especially once she realized that your heart had been broken – by this or that. Lorene did not believe in wallowing in self-pity. She was fast to forgive trespasses against her, and she rarely, if ever, held a grudge. She would encourage you to "put your big girl bloomers (or big boy pants) on and deal with it. And if you hesitated to heed her advice, all she would say was "…oh well".
Lorene began her walk with Jesus Christ at an early age; she attended multiple churches throughout her life where she served as an usher, a deaconess, and on the culinary staff. Lorene and Joseph B. Sims were honored as Members of the Year at the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church Annual Heritage Day celebrations in Mobile, Alabama. Lorene later joined New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio under the leadership of Reverend Dr. D. Anthony Bohles, where she was on the Deaconess Ministry, Secretary (and then superintendent) of Sunday School, and on the Missionary Society where she served as president.
Lorene served as the president of the Walton Family Reunion Committee for several years. As the reunion moved across the country, she took pleasure in visiting different states. Lorene also enjoyed brunches, lunches, or dinners before heading to the theater to see the latest film or live production. She loved Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve celebrations. But her favorite holiday was Memorial Day, the day that she and Raheem were born!
The most important thing on Lorene's bucket list was to see her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from across the country in one room at the same time. In May 2018, her wish was granted with a wonderful 80th birthday celebration in Sandusky, Ohio!
A Time to Mourn
On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Lorene heard the voice of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Martha Walton, her husband, Joseph B. Sims, and thirteen brothers and sisters. Her memory will be cherished by her brother Isaac Walton, Sr. (Denise) of Cleveland, Ohio; her children Curtis Robinson of Phoenix, Arizona, Valerie D. Robinson of Cleveland, Ohio, Raheem Robinson (Naomi) of Oakland, California, and Gregory Robinson of Cleveland, Ohio; the Robinson grandchildren, Jasmine Zeno (Antuan), Jasmine, Ramone, Gregory Jr., Shaneka (Anyoto), Curtis Jr., Cameron, Jamal, Monae, Asia, and Daniel; the Robinson great-grandchildren; Jayla Johnson, Jordyn Frentz, Antuan Zeno, Jr., Gyashe Robinson, Nicholas Fredrick James, Jr., Gelani, Okoye K., and Curtis, III,; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and friends. Lorene also had a daughter of the heart, Voncile Jackson.
Lorene has gone home to her holy father. She is now in the warm embrace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
