Joseph P. West, Sr.

Joseph Pernell West Sr. was born to George O. West and Mamie E. West on October 17, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio.  Joseph was the youngest of 10 Children.  Joseph attended Cleveland Public Schools.   Joe was a friendly, outgoing person who showed great compassion for animals, and the less fortunate people.

Joseph enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War from 1951-1954. Joseph married Coretha France in 1959, and two sons were born to this union, Joseph Jr. and Mark Allen. In 1990 Joseph married Henrietta English and became father to her daughter Shannon English, and later he became Papa to her son Antonio Sledge.

Joseph was employed at the National Acme Company as a millwright for 38 years before retiring in 1992. After retirement Joseph was active in his community serving as president of the Cromwell Avenue Street Club.  He also assisted with snow removal and lawn maintenance on vacant property.  He was nominated as Senior of the Year by former councilperson, Mamie Mitchell.

He was a sports enthusiast, historian and was famous for his candied yams.  Joseph loved life and spending time with family, friends and his faithful companion Sam.

Joseph departed this life on Friday, July 22, 2022 in the ICU at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus.  He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mamie, siblings Myrtis, Habron, Sadie, Robert, Estelle, William, John, Carolyn, and Theresa

He leaves to cherish his memory:  his beloved wife Henrietta. Sons Joseph, and Mark (Rhonda),stepdaughter Shannon, grandson Antonio Sledge, goddaughter Dalayah Adams, his longtime friend and barber William (Bill) McCollum, special niece Barbara Moore, three brothers in law, 4 sisters in law, a host of nieces and nephews, and Sam his dog.
