Obituary

Gary Steven Reid was called home to be with the Lord while his family was by his side on Friday, November 4, 2022. He was born April 2, 1948 in Knoxville, TN. He was a graduate of Austin High School Class of 1966 and a graduate of Tennessee State University. Gary retired from MetroHealth Hospital after over 30 years of service in the Emergency Department.

Gary was an amazing cook which he learned from his Grandmother. He cooked a feast for every holiday and was always on the grill during summers. Southern soul food was his favorite to make including his favorite fried green tomatoes. He never followed a recipe and rarely shared his cooking secrets. The only recipe he ever shared was for his famous chili.

If Gary wasn’t in the kitchen you could find him in the garden. He loved planting all types of flowers, plants and vegetables . He had a green thumb and made sure the yard always looked impeccable.

Gary was also a huge Tennessee Volunteers football fan. He made sure to let everyone know that was his hometown and his team!

Family meant the world to Gary. He spent majority of his free time with family and was the favorite Uncle to almost everyone! He took frequent trips down to Knoxville and Dayton to visit and spend time with his siblings, nieces and nephews and tons of cousins. Gary was the youngest of his brothers and sisters whom he loved deeply. He made sure to keep up with everyone and supported them in any way possible. He also was a huge jokester and loved to make everyone laugh.

Preceded in death by mother, Marion Jones Reid; grandmother, India Mynatt; grandfather, William B. Jones Sr.; uncle, William B. Jones Jr.; aunt Sammie Jo Tyus; uncle, Lloyd V. Jones; brothers, Dr. William A. Reid and James E. Reid Jr; sisters, Vicki Mallory and Patricia Fox.

He leaves to cherish his memories: daughters Keri and Rachel Reid of Cleveland, OH; former wife, Susan Burnham Reid of Cleveland, OH; sister Bettye Patton of Dayton, OH; aunt Doris Jones of Dayton, OH; sister in law, Nancy Reid of Knoxville, TN; special cousins that were like siblings Denise Akers, Wilda Simpson, Deldon Tyus Jr. and Valinda Garner (Archie) of Cleveland, OH; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins he loved dearly.
