Eugene Crockett, of University Heights, Ohio, passed away of natural causes on Saturday, March 20. He was 86.
Born in 1934 in Lancaster, SC to Malachi and Hannah Watts Crockett, he attended Orangeburg State University (later changed to South Carolina State University), followed by service in the U.S. Army before relocating to Cleveland.
It was there he met and subsequently married Lillie Crockett. Together they had two sons, which with Lillie’s one son, became family. They were married 50 years until her death in 2011.
He was a longtime member of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, where he served as usher, head usher, layman, member of the Verse Speaking Choir, and a founder of the Antioch Christian Bowling Team.
Eugene was employed at Western Electric (later becoming AT&T) for more than 30 years before retiring as a supervisor. For several years, he and his wife also were commissioners for a little league baseball team in Cleveland.
He is survived by sons Ronald Crockett (University Heights), Darryl, and wife Lisa Crockett (University Heights), and stepson Alan and wife Dianne Crockett (Catonsville, MD). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, five grandsons and a host of great-grandchildren.
