Eleanor Ernest Cheeks was born June 16, 1940, in Honea Path, South Carolina. She was the eldest of four children born to the late Ernest and Mamie Pratt.
Eleanor accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She attended John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio where she obtained her diploma.
In 1960, she married, Frank Cheeks, and from this union twin sons were born, Darnay and Darnell (deceased) Cheeks .
From an early age, Eleanor always had a keen eye for fashion and décor. One of her first jobs was working with her mother at Mary’s Style Shop helping to style and dress the mannequins for the display windows. She later went on to work at Society National Bank/Key Bank, where she turned a job into a very successful career. During her tenure there, Eleanor became one of the first African American women to be appointed as Senior Vice President of Sales. Prior to retiring after more than 35 years of service, Eleanor received numerous top honors, promotions, and awards. Her ambition, drive and incredible work ethic was unmatched.
Our dearly beloved Eleanor departed this life on Tuesday, March 06, 2023. She leaves to cherish her memory one child; Darnay (Cassandra); six grandchildren, Ryan, Bryan, Donavon, Devin, Christian, Jayla; two sisters, Dy Gloria, Regina (Carlton); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.
