Dorothy Harris Obituary

Dorothy was born to the late Judge Jones and Mary (Cady) on September 7, 1928, in Bessemer Alabama.  As an adult she left Alabama and moved to Cleveland, seeking a better life for herself and her daughter (Annetta).  She was a hard worker and often times worked two jobs.  While living in Los Angeles, California in 1973, she obtained her Practical Nursing diploma.  Even with that accomplishment, she continued doing the work she enjoyed the most, cleaning.  She never saw a surface that she wouldn’t make shine!  Dorothy retired from St. Vincent Charity hospital in 1993, where she worked in their housekeeping department.  After retirement, she moved back to Alabama to get away from the cold weather and snow, only to return to Cleveland in 2001.

Dorothy accepted Christ at a young age and attended Magnolia AME church in Bessemer, Alabama.  Upon her return to Cleveland, she joined Quinn Chapel AME church and was in regular attendance before her illness.  Dorothy remained a faithful believer her entire life.

She loved to travel the United States as well as other countries, including Europe. Of all her travels, her most memorable trip was to Jerusalem. Even as memories her started to fade, her visit to Jerusalem left a lasting impression on her.  She loved to tell anyone who would listen, that she had “walked where Jesus walked”.

In addition to traveling, she enjoyed cooking and entertaining, especially for her family. We will miss her yellow rice, greens and fried apple pies that tasted like Ma Mary's.  She also loved playing cards, going to the casinos or going on casino bus trips.  It really didn’t matter which casino, she just enjoyed it!

Dorothy passed away on Saturday, November 21st at Montefiore Nursing Home, Vinney Hospice.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three of her brothers, Judge Jones Jr., Willie Jones and Franklin Cady, as well as her great-grandson Brian Scott Provens.  She was joined by her sister-in-law, Queen Cady, who passed away on November 24, 2020.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Annetta Provens, Macedonia Ohio, as well as her brother, Theodis Cady Sr., Cleveland Ohio.  She is also survived by three grandchildren:  Allen Provens (Angie), Atlanta Georgia; Angela Provens (John Riemenschneider), Canton Ohio;  Jason Provens (Miauna) Columbus,Ohio,  in addition to her son-in-law George Provens, Massilon, Ohio, her great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.  She had loving relationships with all of her nieces and nephews, many of whom, enjoyed spending the night, as well summers, with her when they were young.  Theodis Cady Jr. and Cleodis Cady were like her sons.  .
