Doris Noble Obituary

Born January 29th, 1936, in Somerset, PA, she passed away peacefully on April 22nd, 2022, in Solon, OH. Doris was a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., with a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master's degree in Education from the University of New Mexico. A longtime educator, she became the first African American faculty member in District 54 (Hoffman Estates, IL). During her tenure in District 54, she served as Guidance Counselor and a 1st Grade Teacher, retiring after 30 years of service. She was well-respected, a champion of education and excellence, but most importantly, known as an advocate for all students and a compassionate teacher.

Her dedication to her students and education was surpassed only by her commitment to the community. Doris was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a graduate member of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., Black Women's Agenda, and the founding member and organizer of "Chains That Bind,” which later became the Hoffman Estates (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She embodied the motto of The Links, Incorporated, "Linked in Friendship and Connected in Service." She served as President, held numerous roles in the organization's national leadership and achieved the coveted status of a Platinum Member. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in supporting Sherman Noble, Jr., in the organization of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in the Northern Illinois region, leveraging their network of men of professional success.

Doris served in and supported numerous social organizations throughout the years but especially enjoyed spending time with the Chicago Chapter of The Sophisticates and The Carousels. She was a tenacious champion at the game of Bridge – if you didn't know, she would let you know! Attending a social gathering hosted by Doris was an event not to be missed, for it was truly “a Noble event!” Doris was a truth-teller and had the ability to make others feel they were invited, welcome, special and unique. Regardless of how long she knew you or where she lived, many affectionately knew her as Grandma Doris and Aunt Doris.

But most of all, she was happiest, loved, and enjoyed being in the company of friends and family. Doris is survived by two daughters, Pamela (Macke Bentley) of Solon, OH, and Lynette (Shelly Brown) of Riverwoods, IL; her grandchildren EMack, Noël, and Brandon, nephews Kenny and Kevin (Maillard), and a host of extended family members. She was preceded in death by Sherman Noble Jr., their son, Sherman Noble, III, and mother, Lillian Marie Bundy. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until her service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 13th, at St. Michael Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Ave, Barrington, IL. The service will be streamed on the St. Michael’s web page :https://www.stmichaelsbarrington.org

Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington, following the funeral service.
