Doris S. Mosley

4/1/1928 ~ 3/15/2023

Doris was born on April 1, 1928, in Kimball, West Virginia.  She was the 4th of 9 children born to Stanley and Marjorie Sinkford.  She attended Genoa High School in her hometown of Bluefield, West Virginia.  She was an excellent student and was the Head Majorette, known for her baton twirling.  Upon graduation, she and her best friend, Ristina (God Mother to Thomas) enrolled into historically Black Bluefield State College.  She spent many weekends cheering for her college sweetheart, Thomas H Mosley, who was the star of both the Big Blue football and Track team, where his athletic exploits gave him the nickname “Racehorse Mosley”.  She graduated in 1949 with a degree in Music.

After graduating, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio and in 1951 married her college sweetheart, Thomas H. Mosley.  Their marriage produced two children, Thomas, Jr. and Susan Elizabeth.  Sadly, Susan passed away in 1972 at the age of 14 while running track.  She was the female version of her father.

Doris attended St. James AME church regularly and was a member of the church choir.  She also participated in many other church functions.  In later years, she attended University Circle United Methodist Church  where she played the bells.

Doris worked as a social worker and office manager most of her adult life.  Her religious up bringing and her deep faith in God inspired her to help others. “ I remember when she found a down and out woman laying in our backyard, instead of chasing her away, she made lunch for her and encouraged her to remain positive and keep fighting.”  She was a member of the Big Sister, Little Sister influencing many young girls lives.  She also worked with single moms mentoring their children.  She loved helping to prepare and deliver food for the meals on wheels program.

She and her daughter, Susan, were founding members of the famous children’s choir, The Singing Angels.  She produced their newsletter and chaperoned the children when they traveled to places like China and Europe.  Upon Susan’s death, the Susan Mosley Scholarship was formed.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Susan; her husband, Thomas Mosley; Sr., her brother, Stanley; sisters, Beverly, Mary, Bobbie, Jackie and Jane.  She is survived by her son, Thomas; two sisters, Patricia and Madelyne and a host of other relatives and friends.   May she Rest in Peace with the Blessings of the Lord.
