Brotha Delores Safo Brown born June 18, 1929 to parents Mr. Frank and Mrs. Mable Safo. Born and reared in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the youngest girl of 7 children. She grew up in the neighborhood of East 36th and Cedar Avenue. Ms. Brotha was a mighty woman even in her younger days battling a medical diagnosis of Spinal Meningitis. However, like always, she had other plans to be a force to be reckoned with, taking the world by storm. She continued on with victory in her soul attending church with her father whom was the Pastor of St. Timothy Baptist Church, her mom, and family. She was educated in the Cleveland school system. She worked in hospitality services with company’s Holiday Inn and the Sheraton where she retired as a Supervisor of hospitality services. She wed twice giving birth to 4 children, Demetrius, Valerie, Andre, and Sherry.
She enjoyed and loved being around family. She always dressed for success and when it was party time, she dressed to kill. She was caring and always helped her children with their children. Some may even say she was another mother to her grandchildren. She loved to cook, crochet, and knit. And anyone who knew her, knew she loved her music and loved to dance.
She loved to joke around, was comical, and was always laughing. And without a shadow of doubt, loved to pray, teaching all her grandchildren how to pray and how to give thanks to the “Most High”. She loved the “Most High” and would always recite biblical verses. Most notably, Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will/shall see God”. She succumbed to multiple chronic conditions that included Dementia, where she was cared for from her home then eventually by nursing homes The Greens of Mayfield and where she would take her final breath, Grande Pointe Healthcare Community. Her life long lessons, experiences, and love kept her until her transcendence on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at 3:30a.m. By her side, her guardian, and youngest daughter, Sherry.
Coming in and going out the world fearless, Brotha was the last of her brothers and sisters to join the rest of her family in glory. Preceding her in death is her beloved son, Demetrius (MeeMee) Gipson, her parents Mr. Frank and Mrs. Mable Safo, her brothers, Johnny-Frank, Willie-Frank, Demetrius, and Lenard Safo, her sisters, Josephine Safo, and Eula Burwell-Calloway. Her nieces, Mable Williams, Devonn Burwell, and unfortunately some of the nieces and nephews of her brothers and sisters and other family members that have passed on.
She leaves to honor her memory her children, Valerie Mason, Andre Gipson, and Sherry Brown. Her grandchildren, Demetrius Gipson, Jr., Kelly Mims, Steven Mims, Ronald Mason, Jr., Ameeya (Matt) Fothergill, Lavelle (Shanda) Neal, Korderro Gipson, her great-grandchildren, Demetrius Gipson, Jr’s children, Xavier Mims and Elijah Mims, LaTajma Mims, Ronald Mason, Jr.’s children, Devion Fothergill, Darius Fothergill, and Daniel Fothergill, Tayla Neal, Tashiana Neal, and La’Niya Neal, Kornayah Gipson, great-great-grandchild, Rai’Mhere Richardson, her favorite niece, Celestine (Ricky) Burwell-Riggins, and an abundance of family and friends.
