Bernice W. Thomas

Bernice W. Thomas was born in Bessemer, Alabama on June 25, 1926. She was the youngest of six children (Lucille, Mancer, Arenita, Vito, Ernest) born to Sadie Bridges, daughter of Mancer and Alice Rush. She departed this earthly life on Friday, August 21, 2020. She is survived by her spouse of more than forty years, Leroy Thomas.

She received Christ at an early age and always inspired everyone with whom she met to grow in their walk of faith as well.  She was an active and cherished member of East View United Church of Christ in Shaker Heights, Ohio for many years. She faithfully served the church as a Deacon, member of the Women’s Guild and on the Usher Board.

Bernice was the ultimate hostess and one of the founders of a social club, The Paragons, an organization known for their legendary galas and events. She was also a philanthropist and for decades held office in the Cleveland chapter of her beloved Dunbar Alumni Association. Her efforts were influential with raising funds to purchase the property involved in the preservation of Bessemer High School in Alabama benefiting future generations.

Bernice retired after more than forty years of service from the Cuyahoga County Department of Social Services, where she was a highly appreciated supervisor, loved by her staff and colleagues for her grace, professionalism, work ethic and dedication to serve others.   

Bernice leaves many to cherish her memories as "Auntie B" and to know her was to love her.

Bernice was a loving wife, an adoring mother to her son Ernest Johnson, caring aunt to Theresa Sims Brooks, devoted great aunt to Kevin, Kimberly and Kelli and doting great - great aunt for Paxton, Camryn, Haley and Maya.
