Mr. Benjamin Franklin Phillips, III was born October 25, 1938 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Benjamin Franklin Phillips and Mozella Bright Phillips; he was the firstborn of seven children. Ben departed this life on Saturday, April 10th at Hillcrest Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Ben graduated from Pearl High School and attended Tennessee State University – both in Nashville – before subsequently beginning his career and starting a family. He worked at Sherwin Williams for many years and later worked for the Cleveland Metropolitan School System before his retirement. Ben was an avid fan and spectator of sports, collected Negro League memorabilia, and supported all of Cleveland’s professional sports teams for many years.
Preceding Ben in death was his oldest son Benjamin V. Phillips, both of his parents, and four of his siblings: Gwendolyn, Joyce, Joseph, and Michael Phillips.
Ben leaves to the cherishment of his memory his loving wife of 61 years, Ruby Doss Phillips and three children, Angelia Phillips Rassoull, Terrance (Yvette) Phillips, Sr., and Byron Phillips. He is also survived by his two sisters, Brenda Phillips Crismon and Sherrie Phillips (Enoch) Boles, both presently residing in Tennessee. Further, he leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many special friends.
