Anna Elizabeth Huff (Carrieker), affectionately known as Annie was born December 19, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to the union of Douglas Carrieker and Mary Carrieker (Allen). Annie was the second of three daughters, Mary the oldest and Marjorie the youngest, and their first cousin affectionately known as Snoke. Annie received her education in the Cleveland Municipal School District. She graduated from John Hay High School. On January 14, 1951 Annie married her high school sweetheart, James Otis Huff Sr., who preceded her in death on August 24, 2000. From that marriage two sons were born, James Otis Huff Jr. and Vincent E. Huff Sr.
Annie spent her life working and caring for others. As a young girl she and her sisters had the heavy responsibility of caring for their father who suffered from diabetes. Her first employment was as a fabricate cutter in the garment manufacturing district of Cleveland and while caring for her elderly mother until her passing 1974. Annie returned to fulltime employment after the passing of her mother with UPS for over 15 years before retiring.
Annie lived a long and full life and would often say, “I have had a good life, I have no complaints”. Annie was a true rags to riches story growing up in the Outhwake Projects with very little and humble beginnings. Annie traveled all over the United Sates and the world. She loved her family and friends and attended numerous social events. She enjoyed going out to lunch, swimming exercise classes and entertaining others at her home. Her sweet potato pie is legendary and a secret family recipe. She loved her church, Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 75 years. In 2012, Annie and other senior exercise group members were featured in the Huntington Bank Kaleidoscope magazine’s education-health issue. Before that, Annie was featured in the October 2005 Cleveland Magazine along with two of her grandsons for her water aerobics classes where she loved to bring out of town family and guest. Annie’s claim to fame was when her home was chosen to be showcased on the Home and Garden Network in 1998, with her late husband.
Annie is survived by her two sons, James Jr. and wife Tonie, and Vincent Sr., grandchildren Jocelyn (husband Benjamin Sr.), James III (wife Mariana), Michelle, Vincent Jr., Douglas, Xavier and Julius. Great grandchildren Nathaniel (wife Gabriella), Iman and Benjamin Jr., Madison and Otis. And great-great-granddaughter Edynn. Additionally, her loving nieces Diane and Janice, great nieces and nephews, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews and a slew of cousins, in-laws and a host of friends.
