Betty Mae McDuffie passed quietly from this life on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her family. Betty was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on August 12, 1933 to the late Virginia Griffin and Clarence Birdell. Betty was preceded in death by her only brother, Roland Hayes Stegall.
Betty attended schools in Chattanooga through the ninth grade. She met Haywood E. McDuffie, Sr., in school and had known him since childhood when they were married on November 28, 1949. Betty and Haywood moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1953 where they raised a family. Eight children were born to their union. Betty was a homemaker who raised her family with love, humor and devotion. Haywood Sr. preceded her in death on July 2, 2003.
Betty was a loving wife and mother. She was a strong resilient woman who loved her family above all else. She was a loyal and devoted friend to those who knew her. She was an excellent cook and generous person who fed anyone who came to her dinner table. Betty was baptized at the age of nine and joined Emanuel Baptist church in Chattanooga.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving children, LaWanda Prahl, LaMont McDuffie (deceased), Montez McDuffie (Mary), Haywood McDuffie, Jr. (Sharon), Allan McDuffie, Cheryl McDuffie, Cortez McDuffie, and Darryl McDuffie. She leaves behind nine grandchildren: Ebony Reese Johnson (Edward), Erika Prahl (Kwadwo), Meagan Prahl (Austin), Erin McDuffie (Patrick), and Daniel McDuffie (Carly). Haywood McDuffie, III, Devin McDuffie and Meredith McDuffie, Betty Jo McDuffie (Devin), six great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
