Barbara Herman-Cozart Obituary

Barbara Jean Herman-Cozart: Age: 88 - Housing Coordinator Bedford Heights, succumbed on December 4, 2017. She went on to be with her Father God.

Barbara was born July 18, 1929 in Middletown, Ohio, to the late David I. and Alma (Harper) Myers. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1947. She married James Cozart of Cleveland, Ohio in 1982.

As Bedford Heights Housing Coordinator, Barbara used her competence, commitment and sense of fair play to benefit residents of Bedford Heights. Hired by former Mayor Jimmy Dimora, Barbara was the first African-American administrator employed by the city of Bedford Heights, Ohio.

Those who only knew Barbara during her 12 years as Housing Coordinator could not have known the true Barbara. The truth is, we've seen her success repeated in a variety of careers: (1) From Interior Designer; to (2) Real Estate Associate; to (3) Housing Coordinator. Barbara's careers have been a brilliantly engineered series of forward and upward movements. Each career has added to the strong foundation she stood.

While the city of Bedford Heights certainly lost a valued and loyal administrator upon her retirement, a Real Estate Broker became a winner.

As stated in the Bedford Heights Register, she reactivated her real estate license, became an Real Estate Associate again. "Now what could be more reassuring than a real estate agency with in-depth knowledge and experience in Interior Design, Real Estate, Fair Housing Law, and the ever-elusive area of politics?" Add a proven track record to those assets, and you realize that anyone in her presence stood to benefit.

Others who have followed her moves have acknowledged her in a variety of ways. In 1999 and again in 2000, Barbara was presented with the "Unsung Hero" award in fair housing by Cuyahoga County. Barbara also received a proclamation from Bedford Heights Mayor Debora Mallin and Bedford Heights City Council for her service as Housing Coordinator.

Barbara was a member of Mt. Zion Church of Oakwood Village, where Rev. Dr. Larry L. Macon Sr. is the pastor.

Barbara is survived by: her husband of 35 years; James Cozart. Sons, Fareed Abdullah and Ronald Anderson, daughter, Darlene Y. Spearman. Eight grandchildren, Ameer Abdullah, Rashied Abdullah, Ayesha Abdullah, Muhammad Abdullah, Veronica S. Jones, Carmella J. Wright, Fatima Satterwhite and Ameera Childress.
